Letting agent body Arla has appointed Sue Hughes-Thomas as its new president.

Ms Hughes-Thomas takes over from the outgoing president at the organisation Lucy Morton.

She has worked her way through the various managerial levels at Arla after spending 24 years as a letting agent.

Ms Hughes-Thomas stated her excitement at becoming Arla's president, adding that she is looking forward to promoting the remit of the group far and wide.

She started her own letting agency following a time out of the country after her initial career as a children's nurse.

"Arla as an organisation has done so much for the industry - from launching the concept of buy-to-let back in 1995, to leading the way in the regulation of agents by introducing its licensing scheme," she said.

Ian Potter, operations manager of Arla, recently stated that an increase to capital gains tax, which is rumoured to be being considered by the new government, would damage the private rental sector.
