A letting agent has stated that he is aiming to improve the standards in the industry by taking on a role with The Property Ombudsman (TPO).

Gerry Fitzjohn, who was until earlier this year the national sales director of letting agent Countrywide, is the new vice-chairman of the operating company for TPO.

As part of the role, Mr Fitzjohn will assist the chairman and chief operating officer Bill McClintock.

He said he is delighted to be joining the TPO, adding that he hopes to encourage more letting agents to join up to raise standards.

Mr McClintock commented: "Gerry will be a great support to me and will, I am sure, make an even greater contribution to raising standards in residential estate agency."

Last month, London letting agent Knight Frank published research which showed that rents are increasing in the capital.

Liam Bailey, head of residential research at the letting agent, explained that this is due to a lack of available properties.
