Landlords warned over gas safety requirements

Landlords have been warned of the importance of allowing only CORGI registered gas installers to work on appliances in their residential lettings.

The comments, from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), come in the wake of the jailing for six months of David Mountford, of Stoke-on-Trent, who was found guilty of carrying out work without CORGI accreditation.

Mr Mountford was also found to have falsely claimed CORGI registration, leading HSE investigating inspector Dr Janice Dale to seek to highlight the health risks posed to tenants if a landlord does not ensure any gas work is carried out by a registered expert.

"This case should serve as a reminder to the general public that anyone they ask to undertake gas work must be CORGI registered," Dr Dale said.

"If the installer does not have their ID card, you should not let them into your property," she added. "Youcan also check an installer’s registration on the CORGI website."

According to government figures, approximately 25 people die every year due from carbon monoxide due to faulty or incorrectly gas appliances or fires.
