The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned landlords not to carry out gas installation work on their properties themselves.
In a press release issued on January 25th, the organisation stated that landlords must get competent CORGI registered gas fitters to work on domestic gas appliances.
The warning comes after the recent prosecution of Martin Griffiths, who was fined £6,000 and ordered to pay £4,478 for carrying out poor gas work at one of his properties.
Transo were alerted when his tenant reported a gas leak.
HSE inspector Hugh Emment said that the consequences of Mr Griffiths' work could have been "extremely serious".
"We will prosecute people who work on gas appliances without the proper accreditation.
"The law requires that only trained, competent people work on gas appliances, and the only accreditation currently recognisedby HSE is membership of CORGI.
"If you are having gas work done, always check the fitter's CORGI identity card before you let them start work."
HSE advises all homeowners, including landlords, to have all gas appliances checked annually.
