Landlords' policy of banning pets from residential lettings has come under fire from a pet charity.
The Dogs Trust claims that the refusal to allow pets is unfair on pet owners and is impacting on the welfare of the animals.
Clarissa Baldwin, chief executive of the charity, said: "Pet owners who need to rent privately are being forced to live in unsuitable properties, or rent with their pets without consent from their landlord."
The Dogs Trust is now calling on landlords to be more open to tenants keeping pets in residential lettings.
Responding to the charity's call, the Association of Residential Lettings Agents said it was "broadly supportive" of the cause by admitted that it could do little to compel landlords to change their approach.
Of the 1,400 pet owners quizzed by the charity, more than half said they had been unable to find rental accommodation that permitted them to keep pets.
