Landlords have been urged to make sure they get properly qualified experts to monitor the safety of gas appliances in their properties.
The warning came after the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) successfully prosecuted a man from Leeds who had falsely convinced landlords that he was qualified to undertake repair work on boilers and other gas appliances.
During the recent trial, the HSE showed that Duke John York used his employer's stationery to issue bogus gas safety certificates to landlords.
It was subsequently found that appliances he had said were safe were in fact dangerous.
After the case, HSE inspector David Green commented: "Landlords should be diligent in ensuring the gas engineers they engage have the relevant training and are Corgi-registered - this can be done by checking the Corgi card or website.
"HSE will not hesitate to prosecute individuals whobreak the law and put people's health and safety at risk."
Recently, Corgi's head of safety promotion, Dan Caesar, said that people living in rented accommodation should not try to carry out repair work on their gas appliances.
He urged them to contact their landlord and arrange for a properly qualified engineer to investigate any potential problem.
