The majority of UK landlords are unaware of the new legislation covering the energy efficiency of their homes, it has been discovered.
Research conducted by Paragon Mortgages found that 55 per cent of landlords did not know that as of October 1st they will be legally compelled to provide prospective tenants with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).
This is despite the fact that they face a fine of £200 if they fail to do so.
Furthermore, they could also be forced to withdraw the property from the market for a time, meaning they lose out on income.
A statement from the buy to specialist lender read: "Landlords need to ensure they are ready for October 1st, otherwise they could find they cannot market their property for let. Burying your head in the sand is not an option.
"Making sure you have an EPC in place early will reduce the threat of void periods,as well as avoiding the possibility of an expensive fine."
