The Residential Landlords Association (RLA) has pointed out that it is easy for landlords to be caught out by complex legislation.
Alan Ward, chairman of the organisation, stated that there is a "huge raft" of measures landlords must abide by, even though many combine their property management with full-time day jobs.
"The new government has shown a very welcome willingness to cut back on the amount of legislation that has crippled our business sector over the last few years," he said.
Mr Ward added that this must continue in order for landlords to have a simpler life.
He called for the introduction of local accreditation schemes as he believes that this would encourage more landlords to enter the housing market.
Southampton-based Tenants Direct recently told landlords that it is important to keep a detailed inventory of each property they rent out, as these documents can be useful if disputes need to be resolved at the end of a tenancy.
