Landlords have to rent out their properties to people who are unemployed on a more frequent basis, according to new research.
This has occurred because of the rising unemployment rate in the UK and due to the social housing sector being "ill-equipped to cope with extra demand".
These observations were made by Keshay Thukaram, managing director of Smartlandlord.co.uk, the firm that conducted the study.
"With oversupply in the rented sector due to reluctant landlords, taking in DSS tenants can be a good way to secure a regular income in the current environment," he explained.
His comments came after the research found that unemployment among new tenants increased to 7.8 per cent, which is up from 3.1 per cent this time last year.
Indeed, official figures indicate that more than two million people in the UK are currently without work. Some economic commentators have suggested that this could rise to three million before the end of the year.
