There is no excuse for landlords to avoid making their properties greener, it has been claimed.
Nancy Baynes, spokesperson for the Energy Saving Trust, a not-for-profit organisation which offers advice on green issues, said there is plenty of financial support available which can help landlords cover the cost of making their properties more energy efficient.
Landlords Energy Saving Allowance is one option available from HM Revenue and Customs, which offers landlords a £1,500 tax refund on their tax bill after they have installed insulation in residential lettings.
With energy efficiency grants that are available from the government, Ms Baynes said: "There is no good reason for landlords to pass the cost of upgrading a property to meet energy efficient criteria to their tenants."
Her comments come as European legislation, which became active from October 1st, means that landlords have to issue an energy performance certificate to potential tenants of their properties, or they could face a fine.
