Landlords should ensure aesthetic appeal of a property

Buy-to-let landlords can make their properties more attractive to prospective tenants by making sure they are aesthetically appealing.

According to Hugh Jamieson, member of the British Interior Design Association (BIDA) and senior designer for At Home, properties should have a "wow factor".

He said that interiors should look modern and that, while it depended on the market, the emphasis should be on keeping a property simple.

Mr Jamieson commented: "For semi and fully furnished properties you want to keep it fairly simple and nothing too fashionable or outlandish. At the same time, you do need a bit of wow factor to make it a bit special.

"You want it to be comfortable rather than dreary, and practical, not boring."

He asserted that by ensuring the appeal of a property, buy-to-let landlords could expect to rent it out much quicker.

In April 2008, the price for a typical rental property in the UK stood at £631, according to the Residential Rental Price Index (RRPI).
