Landlords 'seeing increase in rent payment issues'

Landlords are finding that an increasing number of tenants are struggling or unwilling to pay rent, according to new research by Arla.

A survey conducted by the lettings agent association has revealed that 93 per cent of its members have seen an increase in tenants attempting to secure rent reductions, with the figure rising to 98 per cent in central London.

Though some of this is attributable to tenants looking to take advantage of depressed market conditions, Arla claims that many are haggling out of necessity due to unemployment and are finding useful financial support from the government hard to come by.

Ian Potter, operations manager of Arla, said: "There's been a lot of talk about the Homeowner Mortgage Support Scheme of late but as far as I can see, tenants are being forgotten completely. That's inexcusable in a climate such as this."

Earlier this week, the Financial Times reported on an increasing trend among landlords to subject prospective tenants to extensive financial background checks due to increased fear of rent defaulting and negotiation.
