The Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS) is working, despite recent controversy over an increase in the subscription price to the service, the National Landlords Association (NLA) has said.
A price increase has meant the minimum subscription available to letting agents has risen from £583 to £750 and an extra charge will be payable for each dispute a letting agent asks the TDS to resolve.
David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, said the scheme had been a success overall.
However, he suggested it should not be down to landlords to cover the extra cost of the scheme.
He said: "It is quite clear that landlords should not be expected to foot the bill of these price increases and we will be monitoring the situation carefully."
The NLA has contacted the TDS to find out how the price increase will affect landlords, he added.
TDS chairman John Hornsey said the new model for the scheme was fairer than the old system where all letting agents paid the same.
