A third of people living in rented accommodation have not received gas safety information from their landlord, a new report has found.
Landlords are not providing tenants with important information such as a boiler safety certificate or the telephone number of an accredited tradesperson, according to a survey of more than 3,000 people by gas safety advisor Corgi.
Ray King, home safety and technical expert at Corgi, said landlords needed to ensure their houses were fitted with a carbon monoxide alarm and to use accredited tradespersons to check their gas appliances.
He said: "Landlords are failing their tenants on a massive scale by not following the fundamental rules of gas safety. Their negligence is putting lives at risk."
Around 20 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning in their homes every year.
The Health and Safety Executive advises tenants to ensure rooms with gas appliances such as kitchens are well ventilated and to get chimneys professionally swept once a year.
