The NLA has issued advice to landlords and tenants on how to look for the tell-tale signs of a faulty thermostat.
The guidance is aiming to raise awareness of the potentially serious scalding risk from domestic hot water systems.
The NLA has urged landlords to learn how to spot the warning signs that might indicate thermostat failure and overheating of water in the cylinder.
Some of the main things to look out for are noise or 'bubbling' from the hot water cylinder, and excessively hot water coming out of the hot water taps.
If tenants observe any of these signs, they are advised to switch off the immersion heater system and contact their landlords.
Chesterfield Borough Council recently issued similar guidance to homeowners, emphasising the importance of taking urgent action when such circumstances are observed.
Tony Rogers, the borough's lead member for homes and neighbourhoods advised: "People with systems more than ten years old should be aware of how to spot whether their thermostat is faulty and who to contact to get it fixed as quickly as possible."
The guidance follows the tragic death of a ten month-old baby in Somerset in 2006, who died after being scalded by hot water from a tank with a faulty thermostat.
