Landlords may face house inspections

Landlords may have to register with local authorities and agree to have their homes inspected under new plans to stamp out cannabis farms in rented properties.

As many as 1,000 homes in Scotland are used as cannabis farms and one in 230 rented homes are thought to be among them, reports the Scotsman.

Detective inspector Joe McLaughlan, from Operation League, a national police crackdown on cannabis farms, said landlords and their properties should have to be registered with local authorities.

"At the moment, when police discover a cannabis factory and there's £5,000 worth of damage, the owner can claim it on the insurance," he commented.

Home insurers are set to debate the proposals at a meeting next month.

This comes after the government announced plans earlier this year to force landlords to apply before converting family homes into shared accommodation.

The National Landlords Association said the plans contradicted the government's stated aim of maintaining a vibrant rental market.
