Landlords are increasingly finding themselves having to deal with arrears issues as more and more tenants are failing to pay rent on time, according new figures.
A report from research group BDRC has revealed that 30 per cent of landlords have experienced problems with non-payment of rent in the last three months, an increase of 12 percentage points since the beginning of 2008.
Tom Entwistle, editor at online community LandlordZONE, stated that the increasing prevalence of the issue is unsurprising given the effects of the recession and called on landlords to ensure they deal with the matter correctly.
He said: "Landlords faced with rent arrears should in the first instance try to help their tenants with housing benefit claims and re-scheduling payments, if they will cooperate. Otherwise it's evict as soon as possible."
However, Mr Entwhistle cautioned against treating eviction lightly, reminding property letters that the process can cost around £1,000, not including the extra burden of lost rent and dilapidations damage repair.
