A recent news story has highlighted the fact that landlords need to be careful that no illegal activities are going on inside their properties.

The Milton Keynes Citizen newspaper reported that a local landlord was shocked to find that his tenants had turned one of his properties into a cannabis factory.

The unnamed landlord was called to the property, after his tenants asked him to provide them with the burglar alarm code.

On entering the house, the landlords found what the paper described as "a vast cannabis factory".

He immediately phoned Thames Valley Police and officers soon arrived and carried out an extensive search of the property.

A recent report from Hampshire Constabulary claimed that landlords needed to be aware that "rented properties are often a convenient way for criminals to hide their drug production from public gaze".

It added: "Under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 a landlord or property manager can receive a maximum of 14 years in prison and/or a fine if they allow the production of controlled drugs to take place in rented accommodation. Under this legislation there is also the potential for a premise to be seized or forfeited."
