Landlords discover average age of tenants is rising

Landlords have been told by a new survey that the average age of tenants has risen.

In 2006, the average age of a tenant was 25 but it is now 28, according to data released by website Spareroom.

Steven Hilton, National Landlords Association spokesman, said the change could be attributed to the financial difficulties faced by young people who want to become homeowners.

He added that many people were no longer interested in owning their own home.

"People don't necessarily want to commit to the long-term investment of home ownership," Mr Hilton said.

"Rental accommodation, when it is at its best, is providing flexibility for those people who choose that path."

The amount of live-in landlords has also increased, with lodger numbers reaching an all-time high.

Homeowners seeking to make more money on their properties have contributed to a 67 per cent rise in the number of lodgers in comparison with 2008, according to the survey.
