Landlords could help govt's green mission

Letting agents and landlords could all play their role in helping the government's mission to improve green housing in the UK, it has emerged.

The government as yet has "no clear vision" for its green housing policies, according to a report by the UK Green Building Council (GBC) this week.

Paul King, chief executive of the UK GBC, said: "For too long we've been throwing our money out of the window, either indifferent about our energy bills, or completely turned off by the hassle and upfront cost of energy-efficiency improvements."

But landlords who make green improvements to their properties are not just helping the environment, according to the London Climate Change group.

Making properties greener can also enable landlords to increase their sale prices and rental yields because energy-efficient homes will be more appealing to potential tenants, the group said.

The government has targeted an 80 per cent reduction in carbon emissions by 2050 to tackle climate change, with the housing sector targeted to play a big role in this effort.
