Landlords could generate power for their homes under new proposals from the Tenant Services Authority (TSA) to improve the energy efficiency of houses.
The TSA has joined forces with energy regulator Ofgem and the Department of Energy and Climate Change, reports Inside Housing.
Peter Marsh, the TSA chairman, said they wanted landlords to consider producing their own energy.
He said: "We will work with Ofgem to see if there is a potential for some landlords to be part of the energy network."
Under the plans landlords could be encouraged to invest in energy-efficient technology such as solar panels to help to power their homes.
However, not all landlords will be able to produce their own energy as a sufficient concentration of housing in one area would be needed, added Mr Marsh.
The TSA, as part of its three-year vision for social housing improvements, also plans to help landlords who have tenants that are dissatisfied to improve their service.
