Landlords in York have been criticised for failing to ensure the students renting out their properties keep the homes tidy.

Local residents in York stated that parking and litter is becoming a problem because of the behaviour of students in the area.

Speaking to local newspaper the Press, resident Alan Judson explained that the rubbish problems are affecting the city's chances of winning Britain in Bloom.

He said: "There are all-night parties and the landlords are taking homes away from first-time buyers for easy money."

The University of York stated that it encourages students to be considerate to their neighbours, adding: "The proper maintenance of privately-rented properties is the responsibility of landlords."

Councillor Roger Pierce stated that the numbers of students living in the Hull Road area could also be denying other residents a local support structure.

A recent survey by Accommodationforstudents.com found that around a quarter of students could be put off renting a property if it is not decorated to their tastes.
