Landlords approve of TDS rules

News Category: Legal

Many landlords in the UK feel that the tenancy deposit scheme (TDS) has either had a positive or neutral effect on their business, a new survey suggests.

Figures gathered by Paragon Mortgages show that 71 per cent of landlords no not think that TDS - introduced in April 2007 - has had a negative impact on their operations.

This means that the number of landlords who now think the scheme has been a good thing has nearly doubled since it was launched just three months ago.

"The launch of tenancy deposit protection has been more successful than many landlords expected," commented John Heron, managing director of Paragon Mortgages.

"Prior to implementation, there was concern that it would significantly add to the complexity of letting out properties privately, but these latest findings indicate that the majority have taken it in their stride."

Recently, however, Chris Town, a spokesperson for the RLA, said that the new TDS rules had not been widelypublicised, which meant that many tenants did not know about the system.

He added: "I don't think there's been the publicity [for the scheme] and I don't think it's something that's high on the radar for tenants."ADNFCR-1064-ID-18233451-ADNFCR
