Landlords and tenants 'struggling financially'

Landlords are feeling the knock-on effects of the number of tenants struggling to stay afloat financially, according to a new study.

Research by Shelter and the Money Advice Trust (Mat) has shown that the vast majority of low-income households are finding it difficult to keep up with their rental payments.

It found that 90 per cent of households with an income of less than £20,000, or £25,000 in London, were "struggling to stay afloat".

When the survey was carried out in 2006, this figure stood at 56 per cent.

Joanna Elson, chief executive of the Mat, said: "It is clearly a matter of concern that so many tenants and landlords are facing financial difficulties and don't know where to turn."

Both Mat and Shelter have called on the government to look into affordability problems for tenants in the private sector.

Earlier this month, research carried out by BRDC found that around one-quarter of landlords are either making a loss or just breaking even.
