Landlords and tenants should liaise with each other to make sure the best possible security measures are in place at the property, an insurance expert has said.
Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line home insurance, explained that landlords should encourage tenants to take out their own insurance policies.
He added that many landlords now realised that it was sensible to invest in the best possible insurance measures, as this could reduce premiums.
Mr Lowe pointed out: "Tenants should speak with their landlord to ensure the best practical security measures are in place to protect both the building and contents of the property.
"Most landlords see security measures as a wise investment in their property which can actually reduce the insurance premiums they pay.
"If you are renting, you should ensure you have contents insurance which covers the full value of your belongings. Contents insurance is often a lot cheaper than you expect."
Recently, Arla said that it was vital landlords should make sure they only use properly regulated letting agents to avoid falling foul of the law.
