A landlord has been fined £8,366 after one of his properties was found to be dangerous.

Neil Jakubowski-Birch, the landlord at 37 Rolleston Street, Swindon, was found to have not maintained the building properly.

Swindon Council's environmental health officers visited the residence in 2009 and found poor fire doors and broken smoke detectors, which could have led to problems in the event of a fire.

The four-storey property, which houses seven bedsits, also had smashed windows and was not licensed for five people to live there.

Paul Simmonds, head of neighbourhood at the council, said the case should send a clear message to landlords that they must ensure their properties are maintained.

"There is no excuse for landlords who fail to deliver minimum standards of safety and management," he said.

Earlier this year, a landlord in Dewsbury was sentenced to 250 hours of community service after breaching health and safety regulations.

Mahmud Bulbulia had failed to have the gas appliances in his property checked regularly.
