Health and safety violations in a rental property in Bristol has led to a landlord being hit with a £12,600 fine.

Shemim Yaqub was charged with 11 offences under the Housing Act 2004 and the Licensing and Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation Regulations 2007.

At Bristol Magistrates Court he pleaded guilty to all charges, which had been brought after a tenant complained to the council about the maintenance of the property.

A subsequent probe by the council discovered that fire precautions were lax, with the fire alarm found to be in poor working order and separations between the shop and flats did not meet safety standards, residentiallandlord.co.uk reports.

The investigation after found that sewage was in a hallway from a leaking toilet and that the property had been allowed to fall into a poor state of repair.

Mr Yaqub had been given time to improve the property, but a second council visit found he had made no effort to do so.
