Landlords and letting agents have been given a further reminder of the problem of cannabis farming in privately rented properties following the discovery of evidence of drug production in a Lancashire flat.
Police are investigating the activities conducted at the flat on Pembroke Street, Bacup after private landlord Shahzad Ahmed, of Property Investment Consultants, found dead leaves and fertiliser in the property.
The landlord estimates that the tenants caused around £5,000 worth of damage, including tampering with the property's electricity supply.
However, the only crime the police will be able to investigate is that of bypassing the meter.
Mr Ahmed said: "I was shocked when I found it because this sort of thing usually happens in big detached properties where tenants pay six months rent up front."
The case provides a clear illustration of the danger posed to property managers by such activities and echoes the warning issued by Greater Manchester Police last week, who called on landlords to remain vigilant in order to prevent such incidents from occurring.
