Ken Livingstone has announced plans to introduce a non-profit lettings agency if he is elected as mayor of London.
In a speech to the London Policy Conference, he stated how he would establish a campaign for a London Living Rent initiative, which would aim to "improve the living standards" of people in the capital.
Livingstone said: "In more than half of London boroughs Londoners are paying on average over 50 per cent of their incomes. We should be doing everything we can to get that number down."
It was claimed many well-paid individuals are left with little expenditure due to their wages being swallowed up by housing costs.
Livingstone claimed current mayor Boris Johnson has failed to address the issues of high fees, deposit disputes and poor standards that are seen in some areas of the private rented sector.
The London Policy Conference was held in order to discuss major policy challenges facing the capital in 2012 and establish a plan for improvement in the city's important year.
