Landlords and letting agents in university areas could be set to see an increase in business opportunities in the next academic year, according to one property expert.
John Heron, managing director of buy-to-let mortgage group Paragon Mortgages, believes that landlords could benefit from a reported 12.9 per cent rise in mature student applications for the 2009-10 university year.
Apparently, the current economic climate has resulted in an upturn in 21 to 24-year-olds heading to university in 2009, compared to 2008.
Individuals looking to move into higher education would have completed their applications at the end of last year, but there is still the opportunity for people to gain entry to institutions via the clearing system in the summer.
Mr Heron said: "This increase in demand is not only good news for landlords that focus on the student lettings market, but also potentially landlords in the wider vicinity of the university."
Landlords may find that mature students are more willing to live further away from university than typical students, he added.
