Home improvements 'require the professional touch'

Homeowners, including buy-to-let landlords, should always enlist the help of a professional when carrying out any significant home improvements.

That is the advice of UK home insurance company Zurich, which has published research today (Tuesday, May 20th), revealing that many people have caused themselves extra expense by unsuccessfully attempting a DIY job.

Experts have had to be called in by 16 per cent of budding home improvers, in order to deal with the fallout of a DIY catastrophe.

Ironically, a large number of these property owners had attempted the work themselves in an effort at economising.

Steve Gilbert, Zurich's technical underwriting manager, commented: "With so many homeowners trying their hand at DIY, mistakes will happen but as this research shows it's important to know your limits if you don't want to end up out of pocket.

"Doing it yourself can bea great achievement but we would like to remind all DIY novices that they can often endanger themselves and their property, so if you are unsure, always call in a professional."
