HBF: Energy Performance Certificates to become more important

The Home Builders Federation (HBF) believes that the Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) contained in Home Information Packs (Hips) will influence house purchases in the future.

Families or landlords buying properties could be swayed by green measures, as these become a more pressing concern in the future.

The HBC's director of external affairs, John Slaughter, said: "I think we have to assume that [the EPC] will have some influence on perceptions of purchases. And obviously, if you go back to [the] point about hiking energy prices at the moment, then people will always take more notice of those things in that climate."

The government aims to make all new homes carbon neutral by 2016, and is offering stamp duty exemptions for these properties. The first such home was unveiled in June last year.

However, although green measures will become more important, questions such as location, affordability, and number of bedrooms are likely to remain more vital, Mr Slaughter added.
