Green initiatives can be cost effective for homeowners, landlords

Certain myths surrounding green initiatives need to be dispelled so that landlords and homeowners can see the true value that these schemes can offer, it has been claimed.

According to Adam Vaughn, author of websites Smartplanet and Greenguy, the green message is beginning to get through to people, but it must quickly be translated into positive action if improvements are to be made.

He said that some energy saving measures can be expensive to implement, but added that these wil pay for themselves in the long-run by making drastic cuts to energy bills.

"I think the government needs to take green measures to individuals more and get more involved, and I think people like me need to dispel the money myths about green measures," he said.

"Obviously, some green measures do have a relatively high up-front cost. Loft insulation is a good example – at £500 you couldhave a nice weekend in Paris - but within five years, it has paid for itself."

Recent research from specialist mortgage provider Paragon, meanwhile, indicated that 86 per cent of landlords are unaware of the £1,500 allowance they can claim to improve the energy performance of their private rented properties.
