Green credentials 'will be important'

Britons are set to place an increasing value of importance on the energy efficiency of properties they might consider moving into, it has been suggested.

Melanie Russell, head of communications at UK home improvements firm Anglian, said that homebuyers view the energy efficiency of homes as an attractive indication that they will save money, which might interest landlords looking to market their properties more effectively.

Ms Russell said environmental issues will feature right at the top of the agenda for homebuyers once the UK property market begins to improve again.

The government's Home Information Packs scheme will also make a property's green credentials more important, she added.

On energy efficiency being an effective marketing strategy, Ms Russell said: "When you go to sell the property, you are saying to the potential buyer that this house is as energy efficient as it possibly could be and therefore will be saving you money."

The average UK household will save about £300 a year if basic energy efficiency improvements are made to the property, according to the Energy Saving Trust.
