Govt still on track for housing in spite of decline in orders

Recent government figures suggest that home construction orders are down, but this won't necessarily mean the government will miss housing targets.

Figures from the Department of Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform show that, during the spring quarter, there was a decline in housing construction orders of 12 per cent.

But John Slaughter, director of external affairs at the Home Builders Federation (HBF), said that "the current decline in construction orders will not necessarily affect the housing targets for 2020 at all".

He admitted that concerns raised by problems at the Northern Rock bank had led to some short-term uncertainty, but said that there were always elements of fluctuation in the housing market.

"But the long term market fundamentals, which is what we primarily look at, would certainly not suggest that there's any case for reducing the government's housing targets at all," he said.
