The pre-budget report's (PBR's) inclusion of greater funding for property insulation has been welcomed by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics).
Chancellor Alistair Darling's PBR proposed an extra £100 million to be provided, with a further £50 million brought forward to assist 60,000 more households in insulating their properties.
Landlords and letting agents using rental software could boost their energy performance certificate ratings by having insulation installed on properties in their portfolios, because it would cut energy bills and offer environmental benefits.
Simon Rubinsohn, chief economist at Rics, said that additional funding for insulation will reduce carbon emissions from UK homes and provide a boost for the construction industry.
"Insulating cavity walls and lofts is the most cost effective way of reducing carbon emissions and should be the focus of government spending," he added.
Meanwhile, the Home Builders Federation has said that the PBR's policy of investing an extra £150 million to build new social housing will only have a very limited effect on estimated shortfalls in housing provision.
