Landlords and property management agents are legally responsible for carrying out regular checks on gas appliances in tenants' accommodation, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has said.
Natalka Heath, HSE awareness officer, said the body is encouraging people with homes to rent to improve their knowledge of domestic gas-related risks.
Some 20 people are poisoned by carbon monoxide each year in the UK because of faulty gas appliances, she noted.
It comes after a landlord was fined last month for failing to carry out inspections on gas appliances.
HSE inspector Andrew Verrall-Withers after the case urged landlords not to put their tenants' safety at risk by cutting back safety checks and maintenance costs because of the tough economic climate.
On Friday the HSE is hosting a special gas safety awareness event in Burton, which intends to improve tenant safety in the area.
"We are particularly keen to encourage Burton landlords to come and find out more about this important aspect of their work," Ms Heath said.
