Buy-to-let landlords should take note that properties with gardens are more appealing to potential tenants and buyers.
According to Kate Henderson, communications manager for the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA), "homes with gardens attract people".
She made her comments as she discussed the redevelopment of brownfield sites, which, she maintained, should take into account the necessity of green spaces.
Ms Henderson said: "The regeneration of brownfield land should seek to enhance the quality of life for those who live and work there, supporting a richness of biodiversity and creating a positive sense of place.
"Homes with gardens attract people. Green space is not only important in creating desirable housing, it is also integral to more environmental design. Fundamental to housing provision is the creation of proper neighbourhood centres and not urbandeserts.
"We must positively plan communities which are viable and sustainable socially, economically and environmentally."
