Landlords in Essex have been alerted to a new scheme which would allow them to claim interest-free grants of £20,000 to bring their empty properties back into use.
Under the terms of the Place scheme, landlords operating in the Southend, Basildon, Castle Point, Rochford and Thurrock council districts will be paid to renovate unused properties and let them to tenants selected by the councils, with housing group Pathmeads acting as landlords for the duration of their lease.
After the tenant vacates, properties will be returned to their landlords for them to let or sell, reports the Southend Standard.
Mark Flewitt, Southend councillor responsible for housing, said: "Considering the current financial climate, this could really help a number of people get back on to their feet."
Last week, Newham Council announced that it would be consulting local landlords and lettings agents on a new scheme that would see 150 empty properties being renovated for use as social housing by March 2010.
