'Energy efficiency by window shopping'

Landlords could boost the energy efficiency rating of their properties by switching to double glazed windows, an expert has said.

Melanie Russell, head of communications at Anglian Home Improvements, said landlords can now choose double glazed windows based on a rating, from A downwards, measuring their energy efficiency.

This is an effective way to help curb carbon emissions and reduce a property's energy bills, she said.

"Energy ratings can look a bit complex but actually they are a very simple way of working out what the differences are and what it means," Ms Russell added.

The government's introduction of energy performance certificates could mean that landlords can charge higher rents for properties which are rated higher on energy efficiency grounds, because tenants might be attracted to potential savings on their fuel bills.

Recent research by the Energy Saving Trust said that properties fitted with double glazing could save up to £110 on their annual heating bill and reduce the amount of heat lost through their windows by 50 per cent.
