Landlords with environmentally-friendly property could use it to their advantage when seeking tenants, it has been suggested.
According to eco-property company GreenMoves, eco-friendly homes are likely to "pay dividends over time" and may even prove popular among tenants in the future.
As of October 1st 2008, every landlord in the UK will be required to provide tenants with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) as part of the letting process.
Julian Brooks, managing director of GreenMoves, explained that he expected understanding of green issues to pick up in the future.
He said: "Awareness is an issue but will slowly come, as the CO2 issue is gaining a great deal of momentum, aided and abetted by the cost of fuel.
"'Green homes' cost less to run, of course, so they make good economic sense."
He also added that green homes are more likely to hold their value in the future, suggesting that they are an excellent long-term investment for any landlord too.
