Landlords have no excuse for failing to introduce green measures into their property management, it has been suggested.
High fuel prices and the impact of the credit crunch does not mean letting agents should hold back from making their properties more energy efficient, indicated Marie Reynolds, spokesperson for Friends of The Earth.
In fact, both landlords and tenants could make savings from going green right from the word go, Ms Reynolds argued.
Insulating a property's loft, updating its boiler and switching to energy-saving light bulbs are some of the steps landlords could take to improve their portfolio's energy efficiency, while tenants could cut their fuel bills by switching off appliances rather than leaving them on standby, she suggested.
Making properties greener does not necessarily require professional assistance, Ms Reynolds said.
"Its often a questionof attitude change rather than getting the builders in - this means things like cutting down on resource use and remembering to turn lights off," she added.
Green improvements will make a landlord's property doubly appealing to potential tenants meaning they can increase its rent price, according to the London Climate Change Group.
