Local authorities have been told they must stop charging for access to local search information.
The current charge is £22 to allow a personal search of the Local Land Charges Registry.
Housing minister Grant Shapps pointed out that the new Government had already suspended “costly and bureaucratic HIPs” and that the latest move will further help reduce costs for home buyers.
He said that making sure information can be accessed free of charge is part of the Government’s wider drive to make public sector information more transparent and accessible to the public online.
Although the £22 fee is not being revoked until August 17, some local authorities have already dropped the charge.
