A selective landlord licensing scheme that has been in operation in one part of Gateshead this year has been a success, according to the city's council.
The initiative, which requires owners of buy to let properties to obtain specific documentation to operate and adopt certain minimum standards, should now be rolled out across the region, claims Gateshead council leader Mick Henry.
He spoke recently at a council meeting about how it is time for the government to act on this matter.
"The selective licensing scheme we have been operating in the Sunderland Road area has been a considerable success, and has directly contributed to improved conditions for tenants, support for landlords and reduced public disorder," he explained.
It was after the government's Housing Act that the scheme was introduced.
Last week, Lettings Focus representative David Lawrenson offered advice to landlords across the UK.
He told Investors Chronicle that they must ensure they check references provided by tenants to avoid ending up with "occupants from hell".
