After the Association of Residential Letting Agents announced a new licensing scheme last week, the lettings industry has again come under close scrutiny, with the government suggesting ways to improve the sector.
Now, the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) has indicated that it is looking forward to working alongside politicians to help landlords, mortgage borrowers and tenants.
Commenting on the problem of landlords operating without buy-to-let mortgages, the CML said there are a number of "complexities" involved in the system that can be resolved by working together.
There are "a minority" of tenants who sometimes find themselves out of homes when it emerges their landlords have not followed all the rules on renting out properties, the organisation explained.
"Everyone sympathises with the position of good tenants who were unaware their landlord was not paying the mortgage," it added.
"In most cases, tenants have a recognised tenancy because their landlord has a buy-to-let mortgage, and these tenants are protected."
