Cleanliness 'essential for a property's rental prospects'

Landlords and housing letters have been reminded of the need to ensure their properties are kept properly maintained in order to improve their rental prospects.

Cleaning services provider ServiceMaster has advised domestic landlords that a portfolio of well-furnished and clean properties can help them to stand out in a crowded market.

Among the specific measures highlighted include keeping the interior and exterior of a home uncluttered, well-tended and inviting to create the best possible first impression for a prospective tenant.

ServiceMaster also cautioned against neglecting smaller touches such as wiping down surfaces, keeping the property well-lit and washing windows, as doing so can make the home seem brighter and fresher.

The firm said: "With so much competition for high-end tenants, it is vital if you are looking to rent your property that it has the wow factor."

This comes after Andrew Leech, director at the National Home Improvement Council, last week suggested that landlords are increasingly looking to undertake renovation work on their properties in order to improve their rental potential.
