Carrying out home improvement work alone is inadvisable

When planning and carrying out improvement work on a property, homeowners, including landlords, have been advised that it is important to be "realistic".

A spokeswoman for B&Q, the DIY and garden centre retailer, said that a professional should be brought in to carry out potentially dangerous tasks, asserting that "even the most gifted amateur cannot hope to complete every task alone".

She advised: "The golden rule of home improvements is to be realistic.

"If a potentially dangerous task requires more skill than you can realistically offer, then do play safe and call in an expert. It's not only health and safety concerns that may lead you to call in a professional: timing, budget or even the law may require it."

The spokeswoman listed a multitude of tasks that homeowners should not attempt on their own, such as gas installations or knocking through load-bearing walls.

She also advised that it is "very important" for people to check that they have adequate buildings and contents insurance in place when embarking on improvement work.
