The Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) believes that the buy-to-let market will continue to be successful.
The group's spokesperson Malcolm Harrison pointed out that buy-to-let had helped to prop up the private rented sector when it began to slump at the end of the 80s.
"Traditionally, the rented sector always sees more demand when house prices soften and that has always been the case," he said. "If we didn't have a private rented sector that had picked itself up from seven per cent to 12 per cent, then house prices would be much higher than they are now.
"The private rented sector has seen the same growth over the ten or 12 years, and we forecasted that growth would continue with our last forecast which was over ten years ago."
He said that it had made the private rented sector more competitive, and will continue to do "a lot of good" inthe future.
"It is very much a safe market provided that people take their right advice," he concluded.
