Letting agents and landlords across the UK could be set to benefit from news that people living in Britain now have different priorities other than owning their own home.

Research carried out by Scottish Provident has revealed that 49 per cent of Brits do not believe it is important to own property.

Sarah Barclay, head of marketing at Scottish Provident, suggested that this may be because many people living in the country now feel that buying a property is financially impossible for them.

"With many thousands of people unable to afford what are still high house prices, despite the recession, they are instead seemingly looking to save their hard-earned money to safeguard their or their children's futures," she said.

Earlier this month, Rics told letting agents and landlords that it expected rents will rise in the early part of next year due to fewer rental properties coming on to the market at the moment.
