Many Britons are concerned about the perceived housing shortage in the country, new research indicates.
The New Homes Marketing Board (NHMB) found that as many as four in five Brits think the housing shortage needs to be addressed, with more than a third saying the issue was "very important".
Some 45 per cent thought it was "fairly important", and fewer than one in ten thought it is "not important".
NHMB chairman David Pretty said: "As a snapshot of the great British public's thinking, this poll is both encouraging and disturbing.
"People really do now recognise that we have a housing crisis, are understandably worried by it and seem to accept that urgent action must be taken to address it."
The group also noted that the amount of greenbelt land in the UK has increased by around 65,000 acres in the previous ten years, although most people believe that it is falling.
Other methods of increasing the number of houses available include bringing empty houses back into use.
